About Buncombe County Court Records

Court records in Buncombe County are spread across several offices at the Buncombe County Courthouse in Asheville and nearby. The Clerk of Superior Court, the Register of Deeds, the Sheriff, and state-level agencies each hold different pieces of the picture. We built this site so you can find the right portal, address, or phone number without bouncing between government websites.

Why We Built This Site

North Carolina gives the public broad access to court records under the North Carolina Public Records Act, Chapter 132. The hard part is figuring out which office holds the file you need. In Buncombe County, the Clerk of Superior Court handles felony, civil, family, and probate filings. The Register of Deeds runs land, deed, and vital records. The Sheriff manages the jail roster. The District Attorney and the Public Defender have their own offices at 60 Court Plaza. Add the North Carolina eCourts Portal and the state Department of Public Safety, and the picture gets crowded fast. We pull together the contact details, search portals, fee schedules, and request steps for each of these offices into one place.

Buncombe County is the court hub for Western North Carolina. The Clerk of Superior Court office has 63 employees spread across 12 divisions on nine floors of the courthouse. The eCourts Portal went live for all 100 North Carolina counties on October 13, 2025, so most case searches now start there. We walk you through that tool and others so you spend less time guessing which link to click.

What You Will Find Here

What We Cannot Do

This is a privately run reference site. We have no connection to the Buncombe County Courthouse, any North Carolina court, the Clerk of Superior Court, the Sheriff's Office, the Register of Deeds, or any state agency. There are real limits to what we can help with:

  • We cannot file paperwork or send records requests on your behalf
  • We cannot issue certified copies of any court document or vital record
  • We cannot give legal advice or explain how a specific case applies to you
  • We cannot guarantee that every phone number, fee, or address listed on this site is current right now

Only the issuing court or government office can provide a certified copy with an official seal. We can point you to the right office, but the document has to come from them. For court records, that is the Buncombe County Clerk of Superior Court at 60 Court Plaza, Asheville, NC 28801.

Search Partners

Some pages on this site include search boxes powered by third-party providers. Those companies set their own pricing and run their own services. When you use one of those tools and it leads to a paid signup, we may earn a referral fee. That revenue helps keep this site free for visitors. We do not control what those tools charge or what shows up in their results.

Keeping Information Current

Clerk offices move. Hours change. Phone numbers get reassigned. We update pages as we hear about changes, but gaps happen. Before you drive to the Buncombe County Courthouse in Asheville, call ahead first. Hurricane Helene disrupted court operations in 2024, and the Chief Justice issued amended orders for several Western North Carolina counties. Emergencies can shift court calendars and filing deadlines without notice.
